Thinking of my new flower friends today who started their journey into growing cut flowers recently. It was such a joy having groups out to teach them where to begin. The most beautiful moments are sometimes simple & slow but full of hope & anticipation.

Oh the calendula salve. I rave about this flower/herb & for good reasons. A customer just let me know that her son’s eczema is almost gone after using the salve for just 4 days. This is what keeps me going with this stuff…also that they are simply beautiful & gardening is incredible for the mind & soul & there’s no place else I’d rather be.

It’s the little things.

Planting out some sprouts today & flipped the soil block over & to my amazement (very similar to seeing a real 🌈) the roots had grown into a rainbow pattern. This made me so happy!

The tray they are on has rainbows grooved into the bottom so it makes sense but it was still such a little treat.

Life is full of many little things if we take the time to slow down & notice. Hoping you had something as awesome as rainbow roots in your life today. 💛🌈

The girls made botanical bath salts using my favorite medicinal flower/herb calendula mixed with some essential oils & bentonite clay. Then they had some time on horseback with the sweetest, most patient horse, Bella.

I dreamed of simplicity to fill my days. I yearned for quiet in nature with my hands in the soil. I ached for slow moments that were often rather than spaced. I cried for time with my kids when they were young. We worked for years to make it happen. Hell, we still work for it daily (Jesse you are my hero) & will work for as long as we are capable.

I hear those that say this is my dream. It touches my soul deeply & mostly I don’t know how to respond accurately. Some of us have a pull towards the old-fashioned, gritty, natural lifestyle that fills us with intentional purpose. It can be a hard road to get to more hard work. But it’s worth every second. Trust me, if we could do it, you can do it.

I say this often but the partnership I have with my husband has been everything. Finding a like-minded person with equal or higher goals & ambitions (& of course lots of love) holds immense value to making dreams come true. Just know that in real life tools will be thrown, words will fly off the tongue, heads will butt, etc. That’s part of it too.

This is a tallow cake (aka magic goodness from animal fat). It’s part of the rendering process which takes me about 3-4 days. After all the meaty smell & tid bits are removed, I can whip up the most amazing tallow face cream.

I have made this for years, first for cooking & then for skincare. My phone is filled with before & after pictures because it’s always amazing how this animal fat/sinew turns into this creamy, white, pure goodness. It’s a slow process as is almost everything I do. Guess that’s a thing for me. There’s just something about observing & waiting for something beautiful to unfold that didn’t exist in the same way before.

There’s also something about using all parts of an animal & not wasting pieces of a life. My first experience with this was from a wild hog (so technically lard - not tallow). It was just as amazing. I have never let my husband discard the fat of any animals since then. (At least he tells me that he doesn’t. 😉)

I will have tallow face cream back in stock this Saturday with Frankincense added. Each jar is slowly rendered & whipped to creamy perfection. A small jar will last at least 6 months if using daily. A little goes a long way. 💛

How To Grow Cut Flowers Workshop was so good! That probably sounds a bit conceited since I hosted but let me explain. It was so good to make new flower friends, contribute to a community of growers (or future growers) by sharing knowledge that hopefully inspires & sparks a lifelong interest (ok…obsession.) I don’t intend to hoard the things I have learned over the years. I wish I had had someone to learn from because I’d surely be farther ahead. But as the saying goes it’s not the destination but the journey.

Best flower to instantly brighten someone’s day. They radiate a sunny, happy feeling. If you don’t like sunflowers chances are we probably can’t be friends & you may be likely to kick a dog. (kidding)

Yes I take pictures with sunflowers because I freakin’ love growing them that much & it’s still hard for me to cut them. The joy they bring to others is enough for me to cut them & share with the community though.
